I want you to stop and think. Stop. Think. What are all the things that are stopping you from taking the next step? Launching your business. Speaking in public. Sending that email. Raising your prices. Bringing on staff. Ask yourself, what is stopping you?
I can guarantee that whatever reasons you come up with, it all boils down to one thing. Fear.
FEAR – False Evidence Appearing Real
Byron Katie is the master when it comes to addressing fear. If you haven’t read any of her books, I highly recommend you do!
“There is nothing that isn’t true if you believe it; and nothing is true, believe it or not.”
― Byron Katie
What Byron Katie is saying is that nothing is true, when you really, truly, stop and think about it. Is it honestly, really, true, that you are ‘bad’ at public speaking? You may think it’s true, but if even one person thinks you are good at public speaking, or better yet, if you decide you are good at public speaking, then it isn’t true. It may not mean that you are amazing, it just isn’t true that you are bad. You aren’t. There are many, many things we think about ourselves, others, and situations that we believe are true, that we believe is reality. It’s up to us to question this reality and work through our fear to achieve our goals.
During my senior years of high school I became a real worrier. It was almost debilitating, mostly because I couldn’t sleep due to the worry. Even now I am prone to sleepless nights. However, I have come up with a solution that works for me, most of the time.
It all comes down to imaging the worst possible thing that could happen and then working out how you would deal with it.
I crash a client’s Mercedes. The worst thing that could happen is that they yell at me, sue me, and tell everyone about how awful I am. Well, I can handle the yelling (even if I do cry). I have insurance to cover if they sue me. I can’t do anything about if they tell everyone how awful I am, and the people who know me will know the truth. Ok. I can handle this. How likely is it that this would happen? Very unlikely. If I did crash a client’s Mercedes, well, I would be upfront with the client, focus on the solution, and take charge. So, if the worst thing happened, I could handle it. So, I’m ok.
Some of the fears I know go through business owners heads include:
Every single one of these statements are stopping you from doing something. It’s stopping you from taking the next step, all because of fear. Ultimately, it’s a fear of failure or, to turn things on it’s head, often it’s actually a fear of success.
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.” – Marianne Williamson
I want you to write down a list of all the issues, problems, hurdles and fears you have for yourself and your business. For each of these statements, you then need to work through the worst things that could happen, and for peace of mind, you need to come up with strategies and contingency plans to address these issues. Now, I’m not saying you need to brainstorm every single possible scenario that could go wrong, and then come up with strategies for these. Then you really would be getting no where fast. I want you to address your biggest fears, imagine what the worst thing is that could happen and how you would deal with it. If you can handle the worst thing, you can handle anything.
What it all comes down to is really getting honest with yourself. Is the fear you are feeling real? Is it truth? Or are you simply interpreting false evidence as appearing real? Are you using your beliefs (whether they are true or not) as excuses to not take the leap and create the amazing business and life you want? Stop. Think. Take action.
